Must try new team but don't know which one!

Hi guys!

Here's my "problem":

We start over in our league after season 3 (some coaches felt their inexperience led to bad skill development and want to start over). I've been playing Chaos Dwarves with much success, but would like to try something else.

I was thinking Wood elves, since I want a agile and dodgy team.

I don't know how to start them and how to further develop them. I was thinking to start with 10 linemen and 1 wardancer, 2 RR and 8 FF.

I also didn't know if I needed a kicker and a dirty player on such a team. Do you try to score with your WD early on or do you try to spread your SPP's to gain as much skills as possible early on? Do you foul? Do you only dodge out adn sneak behind their guys? How do you play?!?!?!

Other choice would be Humans with 4 catchers, cause I want to play the passing game a lot! Skavens? You tell me!

All advices welcome!

Fred

Mirascael? :D

Um... Shouldn't you be telling us what team you want to play, not the other way around? :) If you really want to go for agility all the way, definitely go for Wood Elves or Skaven. I've never met a coach who liked playing Humans; most of my league would rather be more mobile or more bashy.

Try something you think will be fun. Every team has its appeal, and you just have to find a team that appeals to you. It's more about playing a team you enjoy than playing a team that you're good at, but that's just my opinion. :)

I think that Chaos Dwarves are a fabulous team and, if I were you, I'd keep playing them. I just wish that I could be a good Chaos Dwarf coach myself... :(

I've never met a coach who liked playing Humans;

Code: Select all

U need to get out more, i have known several, some of them were very annoying, 1 even tho he had a rubber tipped chainsaw (never did more than stun).

As to Sbg's comments. Yes your lineup sounds good. Kicker? Definately but not an immediate concern. Dirty Player? Most positively, good for piling on mummies and big guys. As for who to score, i always see who has the best shot, make sure the lineman are grabbing the ball and doing passes. As for fouling with welves, it should only be when u have a good chance (3 or more assists), your not skaven, gobbos, or undead with cheap/extra lineman hanging around.
As for the human team, dont start with 4 catcher, thats too many st 2 guys out of 11/12.

I never said that Human coaches didn't exist; I just said that no one in my league (about 15-20) has, to my knowledge, enjoyed coaching a Human team. I know that there are at least a few Human coaches here and on online leagues. :)

@ Wesleytj : nice site man! After reading that, it will definitely be Wood elves!

Although I don't agree with all or skill developments, most of the reading was quite interesting and thoughtful. I think I'll have more side steppers on the field though, I really feel that it's a great skill!

As for acquisitions, I'll go Apoth., Wardancer 2, Thrower, RR, Catcher 1, Catcher 2, RR, Thrower 2, RR, Catcher 3, RR, Catcher 4, RR. Somewhere in there (as soon as one linelf gets Leader), I'll throw in the Treeman.

@ Jerhod : I really love playing CD's, but I feel like trying something new, more aimed on agility than bashing. But if the rest of the guys choose bashy teams, I might start anew with the CD's! Our teams are now around 250-275 TR, and we'll be able to take back those developped teams when the league reaches those highs. SO if I don't like my woodies, I'll go back to my first love!

You don't need to foul with any team so DP is a luxury - unless you are playing post Av Piling On. In that case you'd need it to take them out early.

Spread SPPs around. One of the nice things about doing this is that your WD will hog SPPs anyway - but having lots of skilled line elves makes the team much more robust.

You don't need (or want) 4 catcher on a human team. It leaves you with too little S to bash (and you need to be able to bash Elves). 2 is quite enough to have an effective passing game. Blitzers are the real key players for humans.

Skavs are a half way house between woodies and humans - fast and GRs are great.

Just dont go the Dwarf route, I'm in the same boat, fancied a change though Dwarves, for similar tactics. I'm having my arse kicked welland truly, Played 4 Won 1 Drawn 1 Lost 2. ( The win was the first game ).

Go for something completely different, such as Skaven

By and large, I consider it a question of your play style preference.

You say that you really enjoy playing CDwarves - that makes me think you'd enjoy playing skaven more than elves. The reason I say that is while the skaven certainly don't want to go toe to toe with the bashy teams, they're not entirely unafraid to mix it up when the occasion calls for it.

I find the Skaven and CDwarves to be more similar in coaching philosophy than I would have expected (I'm in game 5 of a CDwarf team after a successful season with the rats). You certainly do more running around with the skaven than the dwarves, but in each situation you've got "designated hitters" and "Designated skill players" and the two don't cross over much (you see the skaven stormvermin carry the ball more than you see the dwarven blockers do so, however).

If you really enjoy the field control and bashing game of the CDwarves, I expect you'll be a bit frustrated with the elves inability to control the flow of your opponents' movements. The elven game is more free form with players from each side running all over the place (elves can't stop their opponents from getting into their side of the field, and no one can keep the elves from wandering wherever they please). I think you'd find it a *completely* different style of play and largely frustrating compared to the control game you're likely used to.

So, the elves would be a bigger challenge, but (I'm guessing) more frustrating, while the skaven will be different enough to provide a very different style while not forcing you to completely abandon your current styles and strategies.

Thanks for the very thoughtful advices everyone. I atill think I,ll try the challenge of a Wood Elf team, though!

I'll let you know how it goes!

hehehehee....i've thought of doing a d.e. guide a number of times but haven't really done it...

partly because they have changed quite a bit lately with witch elves being VERY different, and having 4 blitzers.

partly because i feel that a good bit of the stuff from the WE guide applies to darkies as well, and I'd just be repeating myself a good bit.

and partly because I'm just lazy. :)

I guess we all know which is the most important factor for the lack of other guides, then, don't we? j/k!

You are right: a good amount of WE strategy applies to DE as well. However, the WE having grater mobility with the MA 9 catchers and the Wardancers being better all-round players than Witch Elves does change a good amount of the strategy.

Yeah and how many have you written?! :)

sure, there are plenty of differences, and there is a lot of stuff i could say about dark elves that doesn't apply to wood, and vice-versa. otherwise there wouldn't be much point in having 2 different teams, would there? :)

but in general, there are some very good strategy guides on the web for many of the other teams, many of which i wouldn't feel especially qualified to pen. Having never made a dwarf team, for instance, I doubt I could write a very definitive guide. The teams I feel most comfortable with are Wood Elves, Dark Elves, Undead, Orcs, and Skaven, probably in that order. If I ever did any more guides they'd be from among those teams, unless I ever get around to getting those Amazon figs like I keep meaning to....
