Guard, Piling On or Mighty Blow for CD
Playing Chaos Dwarf in a minileague with lots (3) of elven teams, 1 human, 1 chaos and 1 Lizardman. I have managed to win my games, but haven't had much luck with my MVP rolls. 4 of 5 has been to my Hobgob's which means my CD's hasn't gained a whole lot of skills (1 with guard, 1 with Leader). Now my 3rd CD has rolled a double.
I have ruled out Dauntless since it's a low strength league mainly and I just ain't crazy about Stand Firm. So far the Elven teams has more guard-skills than I do so I am considering raising the stakes a bit and going for Piling on (houseruling - has to be declared prior to armor roll). Guard and MB are the obvious choices ... but it's playing catch-up I think.
As a crazy alternative I could give the dude dodge, help him stay on his feet more and could even add some mobility to my line in a pressure situation.
Thoughts ?

I wouldn't waste a double by taking Guard, MB or PO.
I would in fact advice Stand Firm. Stand Firm + Guard make the ideal LoS player. Especially when combined with Dodge. Furthermore, Stand Firm will assure you'll never be pushed of the pitch. If you don't like SF enough, Sidestep is also an option that can be quite annoying. Or Frenzy... though Frenzy is more usable by Bull Centaurs...
I think that, tactically, Stand Firm is your best choice...

My concern about Stand Firm is that if I use it on the line of scrimmage I would just allow my enemy (stinkin' sneaky coward elves) second and even third chances at knocking my guy down.
There's a lot of sense though in not wasting a double on a normal skill - eventhough it will take ages before he gets a 2nd one. That's another reason why I lean towards taking a 'regular' skill.
2 "write-in" votes for Stand Firm though ... hmm ...

Yeah, stand firm is perfect. And if the elves enjoy themselves in hitting the same guy three times in a row - let them. Soaking up damage is what CDs are made for. That'S three elves in close combat for next turn. Take that chance and show them how it is done properly...

As Fronko says, each elf that hits the stand Firm dude, doesn't hit any other of your LoS players, and is thus waiting to be hit back next turn instead of dodging away!. Maybe he gets an extra blow, but that would also mean that another LoS dwarf misses a blow.
And once combined with Guard, Stand Firm is Great!

No that's wrong: when you both have (same amount of) players on the LOS then your CD with Stand Firm will prevent:Boss wrote:My concern about Stand Firm is that if I use it on the line of scrimmage I would just allow my enemy (stinkin' sneaky coward elves) second and even third chances at knocking my guy down.
1. other linemen get blocked instead of your stand firmer (so this argument is void)
2. he will block other of your LOS-players with two-dice blocks bc your LOS will have been penetrated when he pushes back one of them.

Well, first of all, that's what you want! With AV9 and thick skull, you aren't gonna get hurt, and you'd love to see 3 elves waste a turn trying to knock down a single one of your guys.Boss wrote:My concern about Stand Firm is that if I use it on the line of scrimmage I would just allow my enemy (stinkin' sneaky coward elves) second and even third chances at knocking my guy down.
Second, if you're ever in a position where stand firm would actually work against you, remember that you don't have to use it!
And third but not least, stand firm makes your guy a much more reliable dodger than dodge would.

For comedy value - side step.... Its so annoying
- especially if you can get another double. Everyone hates block dodge sidestep dwarfs...
Having said that stand firm allows you to make free dodges - no harm in failing.... so I would go for that
GUARD should be every CD's default skill, followed by Mighty blow, stand firms on doubles and piling on here and there...
We also declare Piling on BEFORE rolling, just like the WPS do
