couple of leagues ago two friends of mine played a game between dwarf and orc,
they had decided pre-match(without telling yours truly!) to play to the death. Neither of them moved the turn marker, neither of them called IPC and as a result, they effectively completely removed both their teams from the league due to horrendous casualties. By the end of the game one black orc blocker and one orc linesmen were still standing.
It is the only game I have ever seen where the number of dead or seriously injured players(i am not counting merely badly hurt) cracked double figures. Total dead 8, 6 serious injuries and the rest badly hurt or still knocked out when they finally called an end to the carnage.
For what its worth thick skull backfired a little cuz it meant that almost all the dwarfs that would have survived came back early and got stamped on.
So yes, IP has a place in the game.
