I just purchased the normal blood bowl game from eBay (i had it years ago and my mum sold it - im sure we've all been there) and not only did i get the original game, in all its glory, but i also got random event/magic item/dirty trick cards which i know are from the deathzone expansion (they must of been put in there because the seller didn't know what they were selling)
This has lead to the problem that i don't know how to use them so PLEASE CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO USE THEM IN A GAME. they look like great fun!!!

Without taking handicaps into account...in essence in the pre-match set up each coach rolls a d6. on a 1 you get one card, 2-5 gets you 2 cards and a 6 gets you 3 cards. The only restriction being that you can only take one Magic card. After that just follow the instructions on the cards. Some of them are a bit vauge and can cause some heated discussion about how they were REALLY meant to be played...but all up they add an exciteing bit of randomness that is great fun. In the earlier rules there was also a handicap chart..so if your TR was 11-20 different then you got an extra card. and it scaled up from there. You'd have to look that chart up. Enjoy!

aye, the cards are great fun and in my opinion an awesome element that was removed from the game unjustly.
the games are are now more cookie cutter, and lack character.

the cards are rubbish.
They're unbalanced in the extreme, and turn what is usually a fun, tactical game into a competition to see who can draw the most overpowering card from the deck at the beginning. Although people say they add fun/wackiness/character, the idea of playing a game that is more often than not decided on who has the best cards isn't really MY idea of fun.
Persistent bad luck over the course of a match is one thing, and comes with the game. It's at heart of every game of BB and can't be avoided, but can be compensated for. Playing at the mercy of those fecking cards is another thing entirely, and makes the whole situation worse. IMO it's good riddance to them.
Take my advice, put them on eBay now.
Blood Bowl doesn't need the cards to be fun...

Some of those old cards are really, really broken. They might as well read: play this card to win the game.
Don't put them on ebay, put them on a barbecue grill. The world is a happier place without them.

WRONG!
The cards used to force coaches to add a dimension to their tactics and made blood bowl more fun than the LRB has turned out. They were a challenge rather than a nuisance. Not playing with cards is like abolishing the dice because you might roll skulls or 1, and the chance of an unfavourable dice roll is way larger than the chance of an unfavourable card.
But you have to play with cards to decide whether you agree with Indigo or with me. It just depends how serious you take life and how much of your life consists of blood bowl.

The cards do add whackiness and fun to the game. Unfortunately they also can be very unbalancing and your well deserved victory foiled by a single card.
So if you prefer a fun game - where victory and defeat are more often in the cards you get than the game play - then use them. If you'd rather have a battle of whits and dice-luck then don't.

Funny how this dead thread has thrown up some of the same Card haters. Ian is correct in that it depends what you want from the game even if his point of view makes his comparison points subjective rather than objective. As I pointed out to the other thread started by this author, the answer by ozjesting cannot be improved upon and satisfies the query raised.

The cards are the best part of BB! It makes it more than my team vs his team. It means you need a solid poker face and the guts to play that card when it can really turn the tide. Sure some cards are better than others, but turning an OK card into a gamewinner adds so much to the game.

I didn't know that was the point of games. I thought it was an "establish who's the alpha male" thing for people who bruise easily. What's wrong with you?

Great fun???
Look at this:
Peaked. You may play this card at any time. Nominate a player on the opposing team. That player has 'peaked' and cannot earn any more Star Player points ever again. The opposing coach should note that the player has peaked on his team roster.
Ha ha!
Or this:
Burst Ball. You may play this card at any time. With a loud "pop!" the ball bursts and deflates. Play stops immediately and the team that kicked off last must kick-off again (any turns that have been used since the last kick-off are still lost)
Ho ho. Very funny. I don´t like this cards. Why thinking a lot about team improvement, when one of these cards makes all kaput(t).
But I love this one:
Magic Helmet. You may play this card at the start of the match before the kick-off takes place. Nominate a player in your team. He has managed to acquire a special magical Blood Bowl helmet made of an extremely strong but very light material. The player's Armor Value is increased by +1 permanently, up to a maximum of 10. Update the team roster to show the player's new Armor Value.
or (the reason is I´m playing skaven):
Healing Scroll. You have managed to lay your hands on a magic scroll which you can use during the batch. You can use this scroll to cast a spell on a player in your team who has just suffered an injury of any kind, including being killed! The player is restored to health and should be left, face-up, on the field.
But when you have no need for the cards, give em to me

. Our league is still playing with them. And I don´t have them.
