Trying to make some custom pics for the PBeM tool - help!

I am trying to make some custom pics for my Dryad team using the pics from this topic. This is my first project on Photoshop, so I am having some small issues. I can do the following: crop the picture & clone the grass to extend it along the bottom.

However, I am looking for a way to change the background colour to grey (using eyedropper to get the correct shade). Is there any way of doing this other than painting the thing by hand? That looks crap and takes too long!

hi mate,
i have done a lot of pics you can reach there: http://fredweb.chez-alice.fr/gamepics_g.php

The easier is to make layers:
1) the background (grey, black, white ...etc)
2)the grass (well ... green)
3) you own pic
you must/should work on 150x150 pixel size and save in .jpg format
You will need to resize/ modifiy colour/ modify brightness/ etc of your own pic. And make this changes before resizing the player pics, in order to keep good details.
