Better late then never, a quick report of my dutch open exploits.
I didn't have any high hopes for the tourney as I had only played 2 games with skaven before. But, as often happens, you can come a long way with a little help from mr Nuffle!
game 1, Fatty, High Elves
He had a somewhat strange roster with no blitzer but 2 throwers and 4 catchers. I got to receive. Second turn I bungle a catch for the score on double ones. Next turn I get another chance to score though but double ones for the pickup again prevents me to take the lead. He recovers the ball and scores: 0-1 down. Great. I get to receive again, waste my last re-roll on a double skull but manage to equalise in 2 turns. He scores back in 2 turns (1-2 down). In my 8 th turn I set up for the OTS attempt but injury time saves the day and I claw back to 2-2. Second half sees both teams failing nothing and scoring twice each: final score is 4-4.
game 2, JAM, Skaven
This was a strange game, a lot of scrums, and it was very close until the end. I think he got 2 blitz kickoff results against me but somehow I was leading 2-1 2 turns in the second half. Then time was running out, after I botched a pickup he missed the chance to score (double 1s) after which I counterscored, 3-1 for me and we called it quits with still 3 turns to go. We still had some time left so in hindsight I should have played on as ultimately I ended up second on a 2 difference tie break result. Maybe I could have scored some cas or a td... final score 3-1.
game 3, Arkhandazar, Undead
Undead are always a tough cookie to crack. Especially when playing a top undead coach like Arkhandazar. I kicked and started with the idea that I couldn't allow that cage to be formed because then I'd be in big trouble. In his turn he manages to make a loose cage and I risked going in with my strip ball GR knocking the ball loose, a scrum ensues, my apo can save my strip ball GR once but not twice but I score 1-0 anyway. Next kickoff I roll a blitz, 2-0. Next kickoff he has really bad luck picking up the ball: 3-0. My opponent was pretty unlucky throughout the game rolling tons of skulls and failing heaps of AG rolls. He claws back to 3-1 but I get to receive and score 4-1, game over even though he does manage to score 4-2.
game 4, Odium Khan, Khemri
By now I had moved up to table 5. But having played Khemri myself I knew I was in for a very, very tough game (my khemri team has consistently beaten the snot out of skaven in tourneys). But as Totti said, "just roll pouring rain on the weather table" and I did. Odium won the roll-off and chose to kick (good choice). I line up and he promptly rolls a blitz (the number of blitzes against me this tourney was phenomenal, it was like 6 in 5 games) and ko's my rat ogre. With all the mummies on the line and the RO out for now I had to keep the ball safe and wait for an opening. It came in turn 3 and I scored. Next kickoff I rolled a blitz and 2-0, next kickoff the rain means the khemri can't pick up the ball and 3-0 for me at half time. Second half I'm down on players and ko's are flooding in, I manage to get into scoring position a couple of times but all (sometimes desperate) attempts are foiled (mummy intercepting, double 1's on dodge,...). In the last turn of the game one of my storm vermin manages to score anyway. Again my opponent wasn't exacly lucky, poor armour rolls and plenty of skulls so the result was 4-0 for me.
game 5, Bluedevil, Skaven
Up to table 2! Bluedevil is a great coach (and a very cool guy) and certainly a better coach then me so I knew I needed luck to beat him. And I got just that. Although it didn't look so great the first 3 turns, the first roll I made was a double skull and the next 2 turns I rolled another 2 double skulls resulting in 3 turns quickly ended. But after that I failed almost nothing, I broke armour often while he didn't and that made all the difference. I could recover the ball on defence 3 times and won 4-1 giving me a second place overall and most touchdowns. So with a ressurrection gutter runner added to the team I am one very happy coach!
