Models for chess

Post by Cramy »

My kids are really getting into chess. So I am thinking of building them a custom set using fantasy army minis. I play BloodBowl, but I am not familiar with any fantasy army ranges (except for a very limited few).

I was thinking that the white side should be human or elf "white knights" or something like that.

For the black side, could be orcs and goblins, chaos, undead (hard to do in dark colours because of the bones though), or other.

I am planning to build a board using white and black tiles. Not sure of the size yet as it will depend on the size of the miniatures that I pick.

So I'm looking for ideas for themes for the white and black sides, and ideas for miniatures to use.

Any ideas welcome.

Goblins as pawns on the one side. Necromancer as king... Possibly.

Chaos warriors as knights. Dark elves as bishops. Orks as rooks. Possibly a dark elf sorceress/witch elf as a queen?

As for the light side, you can do most of it with elves. I'm thinking white lions as rooks, with wizards as bishops. Not too sure on the rest of it...

There are a few Lord of the Rings chess sets available. Might save you some time! Or at least provide some inspiration...

Thanks all. Good ideas. Keep them coming.

Looked at the Lord of the Rings chess sets. Not what I'm looking for, but giving me some good ideas.

I think I'll want some sort of building for the rooks, so I'll definitely need miniature ideas for that.

Take a look at Avatars of War minis for some of your positional pieces. The Dk Elf Sorceress or Dk Elf Queen for the queen, the Beastman for the knights, Necromancer for the knig, possibly the Lord of Chaos for bishops. Or whatever you think they might be better for.
