It's my opinion that if you start the bidding high you are going to get less bids and less money than if you were to just start the bidding at a dollar and put a sensible reserve price on it.

Just me ... but I never bid on reserve auction unless I absolutely HAVE to have the object. I cannot stand Reserve auctions and thus boycott in general.

I've gotta agree. As a rule I don't bother with reserves, can get too pricey. Unless its an exceptional piece, but these ain't!

I never used to agree with reserve prices but, as a seller I now realize, sometimes they're necessary, especially during the summer when hits tend to run low. I'm like Pariah. I like to start all my auctions low, usually a penny or a dollar. Get a dozen or so bids and people start wondering what's there they can't see. The answer is nothing but it seems like some people want to win auctions others are interested in just to have something that someone else wanted. I've had plenty of auctions that went "hot" that I'd never have imagined would even get many hits. This is all I can come up with to explain it.

As far as bidding on an auction with a reserve, there's never any harm in that. If it's not met, so be it. Usually, the sellers are reasonable and it opens the door for further bartering. I've found some really great stuff by not winning auctions this way It never hurts to ask what else they might have laying around that they were thinking of posting.

If you're selling, reserves are much cheaper to use than higher starting prices since you only pay for them if your price is not met. There is a tiered charge for posting anything that's based on starting price. You might not think a nickle here or a quarter there is worth thinking about but I've had months that my eBay fees matched my car payment. Small change really can add up.

Any way you want to use eBay is fine but ALWAYS treat your buyers and sellers with courtesy and respect and they'll usually treat you well.
