In the commercial (made by a governmental agency, mind you) about the origins of basketball, they also show the janitor saying how he's tired of having to climb up a ladder to get the ball out of the basket every time someone scores (which was pretty rare though). The next game, they took off the bottom of the basket. The ball was still stuck in it, but at least now he could just use a broom to get it out. He then pointed out that "that was a pretty good basket", meaning there was no reason to put a hole in it!

Sorry, I'll take a bottle of Red Hook, Sam Smith, Sam Adams, or any of a million American brews over any thing you have bottled up there, any day of the week, Pal. You're a French wannabe, what could you possibly know about beer.Zombie wrote:May not be the best in the world, but sure as hell is ten times better than american beer.Dark Lord wrote:Can we all agree that Canadians did invent piss poor beer?

Sounds a lot like 1984. Do you guys have people rummaging through history books changing names for anything else?Zombie wrote:In the commercial (made by a governmental agency, mind you) about the origins of basketball, they also show the janitor saying how he's tired of having to climb up a ladder to get the ball out of the basket every time someone scores (which was pretty rare though). Or Sierra Nevada, Lost Coast, Pyramid, Sudwerks, Rubicon, Red Tail, or any other local brew. I love being within driving distance of 40 different Microbreweries.Dark Lord wrote:Sorry, I'll take a bottle of Red Hook, Sam Smith, Sam Adams, or any of a million American brews over any thing you have bottled up there, any day of the week, Pal. No, the stories were written about his son's Christopher's soft toys, whose adventures all take place in and around the farm they lived on in Sussex. (The actual locations in the stories did and still do exist.)Zombie wrote: There was a soldier from Winnipeg who had a small bear as a pet, named Winnie. He was sent to England on duty and brought the bear with him. This little kid in England really loved the bear, and his dad worte a story about him. The rest is history.
So the actual, real Winnie the Poo was Canadian.
The connection is that 'Edward Bear' was renamed Winnie because of the bear at London zoo (which was indeed brought over from Canada in 1914 ). And 'the Pooh' comes from a swan that the boy used to feed.
So what Canada can essentially lay claim to is half of the name change of a soft toy. Plus of course the bear is referred to simply as 'Pooh' most of the time.
Just so we're clear:
The 'actual real' Winnie-the-Pooh who the stories were written about:

The brown bear called Winnie at London Zoo:

Now are the stories about his son and his toys set in the location where they all lived, or are they about a 10 year old bear living in cage in a zoo?

Without intending to offend anybody here, I guess it makes sense that when you've only got a few hundred years of history/culture you're gonna lay claim to all you can, right?
Ah well, enough. I guess it comes down to which of the two bears above you believe is the one in the stories. Or which one the Canadian governmental advertising agency wants you to believe anyway.

You can't compare american microbreweries to huge canadian brewers, just like you can't compare canadian microbreweries to huge american brewers. Molson beats Budweiser by a landslide, and i'm pretty sure our microbrewers fare pretty well against yours too. Anyway, we all know that Germans are the kings of beer.

It's all subjective, really. I prefer German beers to just about any other, and I do like some of our American microbrews. Haven't really had any Canadian other than Labatt's. To each his own, but I will agree, I've never come across a German lager, pilsner, etc., I didn't like. For Stouts, give me Guinness.Zombie wrote:You can't compare american microbreweries to huge canadian brewers, just like you can't compare canadian microbreweries to huge american brewers.
