Fouling...

Post by Nagash »

What happens to the ball if the player carrying it is sent off for fouling.... scatter or restart drive?!

I'm assuming it's scatter, but now that I look, I can't find anything that specifically says that... I thought I remembered reading it somewhere though, but oh well. =) I'm sure someone else knows for sure.

I would say it drops in the square they were standing in.

My personal opinion is that the coach in question should have been severly laughed at for doing such a fool thing in the first place.

True. :D But I still like it dropping where the player was standing.

The rule is very simple:

The ball carrier is sent off and the ball scatters once from the square he was standing in. If it scatters to a player they can try and catch it. Once it goes to an empty square or is caught (by whichever team) it is a turnover.

I remember a nice rule from 2nd edition wich said that the ball went to the nearest opponent. This way the coach was punished for being so stupid!

It doesn't specify in the LRB this exact situation. However, in all cases where a ball is dropped or not picked up it scatters 1 sqaure eg:-

Block and KO the ball carrier - it scatters one square from where he was.

Failed catch - it scatters one square from where he was.
Failed pick up - it scatters one square from where he was.

I'm not quite sure the ball is really 'dropped' (the fouling player isn't knocked down or anything).

As Moonsong suggested, based on 2nd edition, the ball should be handed to the referee which in turn could give it to the nearest opponent. Seems like the most logical outcome.

Something to consider in the next review??

The Ball is dropped OF COURSE.
This is logical: the player will not go out with it. He just stop to play, dropped the ball and get out of the pitch (with an opponent's leg in his hands).

I todally agree with DD.
