Well, call me stupid or whatever, but if I had to colour-code the bases on every team for their position, I would get stuck with the Chaos Warrior because he's between a BOB and a BC). Is the Witch Elf a Catcher, a Runner or a Blitzer (due to Frenzy)? Is a Troll Slayer a blocker? If so, what's the difference between a blocker and a blitzer (a dwarf blitzer is as fast, as strong and also has block)? Is a Saurus a blitzer (looks like a BC to me)? Is a Gobbo a lineman on an Orc team as he is on a Gobbo team, or is he a catcher? Is a Ghoul a runner or a catcher (is there a difference in colour-coding)?

It all may make sense to someone else, but I think that I'm not the only one who has problems with naming the different position players.

Unofficial definitions of positions

Post by gallowin »

Remco wrote: Where can I find the actual positions for each player, 'cause I still can't figure out what a mummy is, a ghoul, a troll slayer etc. Is there any explanation about the different types of positions and players in the LRB, or do I just have to accept the word of the veterans here?
Most of the positions are simple...
Thrower has access to passing skills
Catcher has agility skills & higher movement/lower strength
Linemen have general skill access, cheap players

This leaves Blitzers & Blockers. I've heard a few explanations and this is pretty much a consensus definition:
Blitzers have high movement, block
Blockers have higher strength but not a lot of movement
Both get strength skill access

And yes this leaves a lot of players out in the dark about who they really are. I see the witch elf & trollslayer as specialized blitzers. Not really strong but better, upgraded blitzers. Goblins are all linemen. They're just short, under appreciated & nasty when cornered.

Unless someone dusts off an offical guide to putting players into positions, I would pick one that bests describes that player. You might even add a color for "specialized players" on a team. On a personal note I'm the only coach in my league that painted any bases on their team. I had to paint my amazon blitzer's bases so that everyone (including myself) could tell the players apart.

I like Pink's list. I'd change only the Mummy and the Chaos Warrior.

Otherwise:

Lineman - Zombie (the player, not the poster)
Thrower - Phoenix Warrior
Catcher - Wood Elf Catcher or Skink (the cheap and stunty route!)
Blitzer - Wardancer, Norse Blitzer, Bull Centaur
Blocker - Mummy, with Troll a close second if you can keep someone near him

Line: Longbeard od course , low mo but who cares they have block, tackle and they are in the line...
Catchers: Lion Warrior (one of the best player)
Runners : Gunter runner of course.
Thrower: i would take Phoenix (but WE could be great also but i prefer AV8)
Blocker (without BG):Chaos Warrior, very good ( 5 4 3 9) Dont you think?, Mummy, well they should be BG, too less in MO.b ut why not.
Blitzer:Storm(7 3 3 8)block with access to strengh and physical skills.
Or Dragon for AG but Skavens would be better in def like:
One with block,tackle,MB,strip ball.
the other one with block, strip ball, dauntless and ...

I think (as a starting player) the Amazon Blitzer makes a very good Blocker...Dodge and Block to start with means it's very hard to knock her down. They tend to hold the line very well.

She's a blitzer. With MA6 and AV7, there's no way you can classify her as a blocker.

For the record, here's my stand on the "difficult positions":

Black orc blocker: blocker
Goblin: catcher or lineman
Halfling: catcher or lineman
Rat ogre: blitzer
Minotaur: blitzer
All other big guys: blocker
Troll slayer: blocker or blitzer
Dwarf runner: thrower
Longbeard: lineman or blocker
Wardancer: blitzer
Witch elf: blitzer
Dark elf blitzer: catcher or blitzer
Bull centaur: blitzer
Chaos dwarf blocker: blocker or lineman
Hobgoblin: lineman
Beastman: blitzer or lineman
Chaos warrior: blocker
Ghoul: catcher
Wight: blitzer
Mummy: blocker
Skeleton: lineman
Zombie: lineman
Storm vermin: blitzer
Gutter runner: catcher
Saurus: blocker or blitzer
Skink: catcher or lineman

Whenever i put two positions in there, the first one is to me more likely than the second. Choosing between the two depends on how you view their role in the team, and how you employ them.

Skinks, halflings and Goblins are all Linemen to me.
Slayers are Blitzers (the old 2nd ed. roster allowed four, now its two plus Slayers. Seems fair)
Beastmen are Linemen too.
Dark Elf Blitzers????? wel....Duh....Blitzers?
Saurus are Blockers.

But thats just MY opinion.

Thanks everyone for all the info. Zombie, thanks for the extensive list. Thadrin, an opinion of a VETERAN STAR PLAYER (congrats on that one!) is always welcome. :D

Zombie, you seem to be bragging about something that's not worth bragging about. Should we really be proud of the number of posts we make? I'm almost ashamed I've reached 100. I should be doing other things with my time.

Let's face it, that number us posters have under our aliases are more reflective of the willing to continue participating in pointless or off-topic discussions, than of any quality of opinion. Toby, for the love of Mike, reached 400 posts in just a few months.

And some of us have inordinately boring jobs/nothing better to do with their time (Like me now for instance).

Remco wrote:In my opinion these are the best 'regular' players in BloodBowl:

Lineman: Orc (AV 9 makes him go a long way)
Thrower: Dark Elf / Phoenix Warrior (AG4 and AV8, good combo)
Catcher: Lion Warrior (AG4, ST3 and MA8 and access to agility skills)
Blitzer: Wardancer(Block, Dodge, AG4: this is a real pain in the butt)
Blocker: Bull Centaur (fast, strong and hard to kill)

Anyone think otherwise?
Yeah I think orc linemen suck...ALL they have is 9av. Why not look at the dwarf longbeard, for instance, who has av9 and some useful skills? Or even tho they start with no skills, elf linemen have great stats and the potential for really great things.

For throwers, I'd have to go with the wood elf over the other 2. Considering that throwers don't get hit that often, I'd prefer the MA over the AV, that one square shortens pass ranges pretty often.

Catcher: I'd have to go with the gutter runner, just because of the possibilities opened up by mutations. Not just 1 turners either. The scariest GR's I've seen are the Blk, Horns, Dauntless ones so you have a very fast dangerous blitzer (who can still be used very nicely in the scoring role as well)...then there's the passblock and foul appearance ones, and so on. High Elf is a good 2nd place choice tho.

Blitzer, I'll agree with you, WD. Witch Elf used to compete, but the nerfing of frenzy brings her down a bit. I'd also go an extra step and call them the best player on the field overall. Honorable mention to Orc Blitzers, who are very nasty.

Blocker: Since I'd call the Bull Centaur a Blitzer, not a blocker, I'd have to go with the Chaos Warrior here. Great statline, decent movement, and AG3 make the Chaos Warrior good at everything. But their forte' is still hitting, and they do it as well as any with ST4 and mutations.

I think the game's best linemen are the Dark Elf ones. (High elf linemen aren't nearly as good). At 6 3 4 8, they have few weaknesses, and with ag 4, each and every one of them is a scoring / dodging threat. You can also make the case for Longbeards, it depends on your game.

Catchers/runners: gutter runners without a doubt. One turn scorer in two skills, with VLL as a way to improve MA without rolling a 10 is awesome. Combine that with the power of the Rat Ogre to open a hole in your line.

Blitzers: Probably Trollslayers, dauntless is a really good in a blitzer, who frequently has to take out the big guys. Beastmen make decent blitzers too because of their horns, Strength and Physical skill access.

Blockers: I'd take the Chaos Warrior, actually. AG 3 and MA 5 make him very flexible, and again, Claw and Razor Sharp Fangs are lethal, not to mention all the other fine stuff (imagine a line of Stand Firm, Tentacles Chaos warriors!)

Throwers: Ogres :P adding TTM and Goblins to the already (IMO) really powerful Orc lineup is a little much.
