Rookie Orc Team Vs Rookie Wood Elf Team

Post by massacre »

Hi guys, i have got an orc team.

3 x BOB
4 x Blitzers
1 x Ogre
1 x Thrower (+1AG)
2 x Gobos

Apoc
2 RR
6(?) FF

i was wondering if you could give me some good tatics to help keep those elfs in check so that they dont run circles around me. I was thinking, if i win the tos, then would it be better if i kick?? as this will allow me to *try* to stop the TD and hold off till half time (maybe even 1-0) and then take it easy and slowly push up the field in the second half?

I was wondering how is best to defend against WE, as i have never played them so i am unsure as to what to expect :)

Any suggestions are most welcome :)

Thanks guys!

I usually let them score first asap (2nd turn), then spend the rest of the first half smashing them, scoring on the last turn if I can. Second half, I get the ball first, so I spend the entire half smashing them, again scoring on the last turn for the win.

The thing to know about Wood Elves is they are VERY opprotunistic. In other words, if you fail fielding the ball (pick-up, throw, catch), they WILL score on you. If the ball is ever lying on the pitch, you're in trouble.

The best way to let them score early is to mash them on the line, but lineup so you give them both sidelines. Use a couple of safeties to FORCE the issue, and/or mash any guy without the ball who comes downfield.

If you DON'T want them to score quickly, take away the sidelines, line up so your TZs account for the first 2 rows of spaces on the LOS, spread the middle, and use at least 2 safeties. There is a really good illustration of this on p.7 of LRB.

I'm presuming he's got 1 War Dancer plus line elves.

Hit them as much as possible. Foul the WD every chance you get. Over whelming numbers will win you the game.

Do not use 1 turn TD, except at the end of half or for lobbing a gobbo downfield when he doesn't have the ball (if he falls over its not a turnover and he can still stand up and put a TZ on the ball carrier). Use your Ogre to block as much as you can (MB makes a nasty mess of Av7).

If you are in possession and the WD is able to reach you try to run a double line of TZ's between him and the ball carrier. it doesn't need to be strong, just enough to force him to make 2~3 dodges, leap or use his bltiz. He can only leap once per turn.

If you can't form a double line  then get as many bodies around the ball carrier as possible since he'll almost certainly get a 1 die block on you. You might want to use Blitzers as ball carriers anyway.

As for overall strategy play it slow and steady. If you win the toss kick - he'll almost certainly score quickly - then use the remaining 6-7 turns to score yourself. When you receive at the beginning of the 2nd half just make a nice slow drive to score on your last turn - it should be 2-1, but if you drop the ball or fail a pass he'll almost certainly score from it.

Oh if he's only got 1 TRR make all his elves dodge as much as possible. Those 1's can win you the game!

You can use your Gobbos as recieving threats, foulers and backfield support when you are on offence. At the very least, he will draw off one Elf from the rest of the crowd, and if you get fortunate his dodge and stunty can be very irritating in the backfield. Try to make sure you don't give him any gaps to run through when you have the ball.

Don't forget to try to get your Ogre 2 assists when he hits somebody. A three dice blowith Mighty Blow can really hurt a 7 armor team. Secure the ball before you hit anyone with him, since you can't reroll any of his hits.

Well, i won the game 2 - 1 YAY!

He won the toss, and kicked first, so i spent all half walking up the pitch to score in turn 8 (KO`ing 5 elfs (1 WD) in the progress) then i kicked to him, he scored in three turns, so that left me with 5 turns to make it 2-1 :)

I am really starting to doubt my Orc team, as far as hard hitters go they are useless!! This is my third game, and i have only got one cas (that was from this game) AND we was on astro granet (so the little elfs had AV 6!!) for some reason every armour roll went through, but all i can be able to roll is KO!! :pissed:

Ahh well, at least on line elf killed himself trying to dodge out (anything but a 1!!...... Its a 1! :o ) hehehe

Orcs aren't a hard hitting team until you get a few DPs, MBs and POs. Their great strength lies in
  • High Av - so other power teams can't wipe out the team -
  • High ST - they can make more blocks than S3 teams.
  • A Passing game - which most other power teams don't have access to.
  • 1 Turn TD - with throwing Gobbos downfield
This gives them a big edge against most flair teams and most power teams.
