Tritex and Reaper

Post by NightDragon 2 »

Hi Folks,
Apologies if this has been done to death, but I have been trawling through all the buys I want in the next few months. Most things I can get from the Tritex site. I presume that I can order all different companies minis from this site apart from Reaper?
Next question is concerning mini sizes. What are Freebooter, D&D and Reaper mini sizes like in comparison to GW?
Next one is D&D. They come already painted?! Surely not?!
Finally are Reaper paints any better than GW and can you order all these not using PayPal?
Sorry also if this should be in some other forum, I didn't know where to put it!

Lets try some answers

1) D&D minis are pre-painted plastics. You can repaint them if you want. The plastic used is quite soft, so minis don´t break if you bend them. I wouldn´t use them as BB models. they are also smaller than similar GW models

2) If you visit the freebooter website, you can see the actual heights of each miniature they produce and in how many parts it is casted. In general, Freebooters tend to be a bit bigger than a standard GW mini.

http://www.freebooterminiatures.com

3) Reaper minis in general tend to be a bit bigger than GW minis. They call that "Heroic scale", which is actually 32mm. But you hae to be careful. Some minis are way too big to use on a BB board, some others might be fine. Prize is an indication for size, but you may ask (here or somewhere else) about the size for the minis you have in mind.

4) I can´t tell you anything about Reaper or GW paints. I don´t use them. Some very good painters I know use Reaper Master Series paints, some use GW, others Vallejo Model Color. It´s up to personal preference I think.

5) If you want to order directly from reaper, you can use credit cards as well.

Cheers mate. Any idea whether the other paints that you mentioned are also water based and whether they are as thin as GW paints...the reds and yellows anyway?

They are all water based.
If you ask me I think the reaper paints are superior to the GW paints. I mostly use Reaper pro paints when given the choice. These are the only paints where I actually used a pot to the last drop without the colour drying away. I still use GW paints but never ever again their white or black. :pissed:
(Ok, the newer GW pots with the lid on top are not too bad.)
Sadly no store around here has the Reaper master paints so I never used them but they should at least be as good as the pro paints.
If you can't get Reaper paints go with Vallejo. Same as the Reaper Master Series they come in a nice handy dropper to prevent them from drying out.

My personal experience though is that the Vallejo colours are sometimes a bit too thin for my taste. You have to shake the bottle for quite some time before use and may have to apply a few more layers.
The Reaper paints have some nice colours. Not only the more cartoonish style like most of the GW paints. And they are cheaper than GW.

And all the paints mix well with each other, whatever brand you use.

Hope that helps. If you got more questions just ask.

Thanks BoneHead that was a great help. I think that I will buy a lot of these paints. Can you advise me on converting tools? I am guessing that GW equipment is not so good, so where do you get your stuff from?
Tritex...I think I need to pm you really, but I am planning quite a big buy and it looks as though I can get most of what I want from your site. However, I don't have paypal and don't want to use it, so I would be looking at paying my transfer. I have bought stuff from Galak before by this method so he will be able to confirm that I am reliable...I hope!
Really I am hoping to put the order together in the next couple of weeks and is very dependent upon me getting a job offer on thursday that will bring me back to the UK.

For conversions and sculpting I only use one tool. This one:

and mostly the right tip.

And the other end I use sometimes.

I use it 'cos it's a magic tool my girlfriend gave me. :D

I have another set of various sculpting tools but rarely use them.
This set:

In most cases a needle or a toothpick works well too.

And I use greenstuff from GW or ProCreate by Impact!.
http://www.impactminiatures.com/index.php?option=sculpt
The difference is that ProCreate is not as sticky as Greenstuff but often I prefer ths stickiness of GS. Just personal taste. Many prefer ProCreate.
The good is you can get a small test sample of ProCreate for just 1£.

When I order from Heresy miniatures I'll get their greenstuff. Cheaper than GW but a GW batch lasts long enough so it does not make much of a difference for me. They also have brownstuff which I think dries harder than greenstuff and is better for sculpting sharp edges. Not sure, I've never used it, yet.

Another note on the sculpting tools:
The one I use is not made to be used for miniatures. It's a dental tool. The advantage is that it has no flashlines as my other badly crafted tools. Bad for smooting flat surfaces. You should check ebay for dental tools but I can't promise that they are always cheap but you won't be disappointed when you use it/them instead of the tools the mini-makers have for sale. I could be wrong but that's my experience.
If you want to get other tools I guess Heresy is your best bet.

And don't forget a sharp knife, wire and a hand drill and some small files on your sculpting table. My hand drill I got from GW but their drills were crappy and too soft and broke on first use so I got some from a hardware store. GW were the only to purchase the drill from in my area but you may find cheaper solutions. For some butchering a small saw could also be needed.

Phuck it!!! I failed to get the job! Now I have to search Bucharest for some decent hard ware stores and rely upon family bringing me stuff out that I order. Thanks for the advice BoneHead.
Tritex: I will pm you soon I think. I have written my order down so can just type it out. Any decision on the transfer between bank accounts option for paying and do you sell modelling equipment, in particular drills and pins?
