1. Buy the box set and stop being such a scrooge. I've got GW shares you know!
2. My pub team. Buy them a drink and they'll do anything.
3. A sense of humour and a thirst for beer.

OK, seriously, you reallly need the boxed game to play. Other than the rulebook it comes with the playing field, tthrowing, scatter, and throw-in templates, blocking dice, a couple of plastic teams (humans and orcs), as well as reference cards and misc other things needed to play the game. Just a note, other than the rulebook, nothing else in the box can be ordered through mail order. Since you are a newbie, I would suggest that you start with either humans or orcs to play first and after you get the basics of the game, you gan then loook at other teams. BTW, the box sets of teams available are basically the same cost, no team is cheaper than any other. It's up to you if you want to paint up your teams, but if you think you might want to try playing in an official tournament in the future, it would be recommended. Any questions you have about rules, etc. you should be able to find the answer here at TBB.

Oops, forgot to mention the cost, according to the GW Canada website, the new box set will cost $85, which isn't bad considering the 3ed box set was the same price and had half the amount of rules, you had to buy the deathzone suppliment to get the rest of the rules. The box set contains the equivilent of the LRB (the Blood Bowl Handbook), which sells for $45 on it's own. Since you get everything you need to play, including 2 teams, the price fot the box set is pretty good (one 12 piece metal team will cost around $50 on it's own).

Anyway, just wondering where in Canada you live? You know it's a big country, so what province are you in? It would be nice if you were in western Canada (Alberta in particular), need more Bloodbowlers out here.

Bloodbowl on the cheap

Post by CauCauCau »

I'm also from Canada (Winnipeg). I'll share with you how we made cheap sets of bloodbowl to supplement an overattendance at our last league day.

The pitch: The simplest way to make a pitch is to go to Walmart and buy 4 large plastic sheets of crocheting material. It's plastic and is available in the craft section. If you tilt it in the light, you'll see that it faintly has squares on it. Get the ones that are slightly larger than an inch (or an inch if you aren't sure). You'll want to cut these to shape (you'll need a 15 square by 26 square field). Either glue them down to a base or a frame of some sort. I'd recommend spraypainting it black and then dry-brushing it a metal colour. Then paint on a bunch of little red "+" signs on the corner of every square. You'll also want to paint on the endzone lines, line of scrimage and widezone lines. Spray it with a clear sealer of some sort. Now you have a metal grate to play your games of bloodbowl on.

You'll also need to construct something to use as your dugout, score counting space, turn counting, reroll spots, etc. The cheapest: a piece of paper and a marker.

The dice. Hit a craft store (like Michaels) and buy a package of wood cubes. Draw the different faces on with a sharpie or other permanent marker. Voila-- block dice. Most gaming stores sell 8 sided dice.

The templates. Get a sheet of clear plastic. The stuff used for report covers available at any staples or office despot will work fine. The throwing template: From the centre of the thrower's square to the end of "quick pass" is 11.5 cm, another 10cm for short and long pass and a further 7.5cm for the long bomb. The template is 4.9cm wide. The other template is simply a tick-tack-toe board with the numbers 1-8 in the squares (not the centre square though) and the sideline template is just as easy to make.

The team. Convert a team out of your favorite Warhammer Fantasy Regiment boxed set. Choose carefully though, as not all come with the right miniatures to make a whole team. The conversions can also be difficult if you want to remove the weapons and make the hands look natural. In the league I'm in, the following teams have been converted from a regiment box: Kroot (using the 40k kroot and the norse list and heavy conversions to distinguish them), Dark Elves (quite the heavy conversions for the witchelf). Dwarves, Chaos (4 chaos warriors and beastmen converted from Chaos Marauders -- half of two regiments rather than from one). Skaven (from a box of night runners), Goblins, Undead ( a box of zombies and a few metal mummies-- ghouls were made by reposing them into jumping and running positions, wights were given armour bits from other models and cut out of card/plastic sheets)-- there were probably a couple of others made that I'm forgetting about.

Ball: you'll think of something.

You can make bloodbowl cheap if you want to. I bought the rules and deathzone handbook and I'm happy I did (except deathzone, with the release of the LRB, I prefer the integrated approach). The price of the metal teams is a bit steep now ($80 Canadian for 11 elves?!) so I've taken to converting my teams (reaper miniatures is a GREAT line to convert certain player's from, especially the big guys). There are lots of different miniature manufacturers out there, so keep your eyes open.

use the WFB boxed sets. skaven work nicly(night runners boxed set) and next im going to de eather dwarfs(dwarf warrior boxed set) or norse(marouders boxed set)

but i think its cheapest to just get the boxed game. also, u can teach a friend to play and stuff(u get 2 teams in the box)
