Conventional wisdom is to start with humans or orcs and see what you get out of them. These teams play fairly conventionally (unlike lizardmen, for example) and are cheap enough that you can afford some position players initially (unlike elves) and are reasonably flexible as you learn. After that try out others to see what suits you best.
If you are starting against Valen's high elves, then they will probably run rings round you given their high agility and much higher team rating. The humans will at least stand a chance of scoring, while the orcs will at least bash a few heads.
It might be kinder of your friends to start out with a rookie team against you too just till you got the hang of the game.
Cheers,
Martyn

Stuff it! play as the underdog and enjoy it.
If your "friend" wants to play you with a TR237 team then play malicious.
You may never have to use your team again, so go Orcs, buy big players and kill a couple of his favourites.
Since he is high elves, i recommend killing the thrower, not only does it feel good, it may also give you a chance at winning if you get him out early and then spend the rest of the time in the famous "box" offence.
By the end of the game if you have managed to score or you have killed an opposing player then the moral victory is yours.
No matter what, dont go in expecting to win, expect to hurt him more than he thinks you will.

If u feel u must play an elf team off the bat i would suggest wood elves, tho your best choice would be the afore mentioned human or orc teams. If u feel u must play a bashy team (more bashy than the orcs) then take the new Khemri team (really put the hurt on those helfs of valen).

I WAS ONLY BLOODY JOKING!!!!!!
I would never play a rookie with a 100+ team
, I am only teaching him how to play, so I will probably take either Human or Orc (which ever he does not take).
I thought you lot would have the inteligence to realise I was joking when I suggested goblins or halflings
.
SO GET OFF MY BACK
PLEASE!!!!!!

Actually i was figuring u were joking, but the idea of a 100tr Khemri team killing 1 or 2 important helfs was too amusing (and with beginners luck somewhat likely), as was the idea of your helf team being outscored by a new welf team.

I did hope you were joking Valen. Notice that my second paragraph began with "If" and that I finished with a wink smiley.
It might be easier for Valen to take humans and Chimp to take the orcs. OK, the orcs move slower, but they stand up to punishment for longer. On the whole, I think it's more frustrating to be players down than to have slower players when you are beginning.

I started out by playing Humans and have always favoured them, though I can see how Orcs are better suited to new players for the reasons described.
I wonder .. does the team you choose at the outset have any bearing on the types of team you choose later on ? i.e. if you go Orcs do you favour bashy teams; if you go humans do you favour a passing game ?

I would say yes and no, the first team you pick will have a bearing on the types of team you pick, but not definatley in the way you have suggested.
For instance if you have an orc team and like them, then you will probably pisk chaos, dwarves, etc... but if you don't like them, bring on the elves, skaven, etc.....

WHat you talkin about willice?
Sorry, i got a bit carried away earlier,
I suggest that he should play Orcs if he is the sort of guy who came from warhammer or 40K etc and likes killing things.
If this is his first Games workshop game then give him humans and let him play it more for the football/sport side rather than the killing.
On the earlier subject, i think that the team you go first does effect what teams you prefer. I started out with skaven and have always favoured fast teams, I have "diversified?" into high elf, dark elf, wood elf.
But i would say that over time you end up playing as pretty much every team in the game at some stage, certainly my friends and i always do
