Re: Ogres or Halflings

Post by plasmoid »

Hi Jimmy,
the very nature of my project is reasonably small tweaks.
130K ogres and MA6 snots (still 20K) is my version.
I've won a small tournament with MA6 snots, but I know it's not top half of tier 1.

If I had absolute control I would playtest halfling linemen with 0-6 ogres, fixing 2 terrible teams in one swoop, while getting rid of the annoying Tolkienesque fluff of hobbits & treemen.
But that's just me :D

Cheers
Martin

@plasmoid: if you were able to introduce this fabled halfling&ogre team to the game (either as a replacement for both teams, or even better, just replacing the ogres and keeping the other halfling version as an alternative) I would officially declare this to be a heroic feat of Greatness!!!
I would just love that so much, fluffwise, playingwise...

and once again this shows that it's impossible to completely please everyone, and also that blood bowl is a really amazing game for still doing a pretty good job at attempting this... gosh, doesn't this sound a bit tacky...

Hear hear! :orc:

Isn't it possible to take Halflings, no Treemen and use Morg and Bertha as your Ogres?

130k Ogres? Ooh... 130k x6 = 780k; balance 220k
Minimum 5 Snotlings = 100k; balance 120k = TRR, Apo (for Ogres, ofc).

Heh, see :orc:
That's why I keep my radical dreams to myself, and stick with the gentle nudges 8)
But I do think those ogres are a lot more playable.
0-2 gobbos would also have a huge impact :)

Halflings and Ogres, if well coached, can be formidable opponents in tournaments as it is. I dread playing against them.

LOL Smeborg, you dread playing vs Ogres and Flings in tournaments? Really?
What about all the real teams?
I think the Flings+Ogres idea is cool, I agree that the Hobbit fluff is terrible.
In the 2nd Ed rules the Oldheim Ogres had a few human players on the team, that would be a way to make the snots list viable, along with 120k Ogres.

Yes. How many tournaments have you played in, Jimmy, and how often have you played against 'Flings or Gobbos in them? It's easy if the coach is weak, but if he's good, it is never easy.

I've played a lot of tournaments and I LOVE it when I play Goblins Flings or Ogres because it's basically a bye although if it's not in the first round I'm not happy because it means I have lost a game.
Seriously man you cannot compare these teams to the power teams that you should be fearing ( Zons, WE, Skaven, Undead etc).

Maybe it's because I play Nurgle a lot in tourneys, so never have more than 2 RR (sometimes 1), and few Block or Wrestle players. Thus I fear the Chef. I've always beaten Gobbos and 'Flings, I lost once to well-coached Ogres when I was about to win and quad-skulled. I managed to CAS 3 Ogres in that match (including a crowdsurf by a rookie Rotter), but it was too late. Against less well coached Ogres, I have my best ever tourney CAS record (10). I agree that playing against poorly coached Stunty teams can be like a bye, which is a bit of a shame really, as it tends to distort tourney results.

I feel that well coached 'Flings are always capable of sneaking a win with a turnover (thanks to the Chef) and/or a 1 turn TD. This hasn't happened to me yet, though.

I don't fear the "power teams" particularly. I enjoy playing against them. Nurgle tend to do do well against 'Zons and Skaven, Undead are more tricky (say evens), WEs would I guess be the most difficult of the 4 teams you quote, games against them tend to be wild and close, tending to draws or last ditch wins (record favours the WEs, IIRC).

Here are some stats from FUMBBL, games with a TV of 120 or less, it seems pretty clear that you should not be "dreading" games vs stunties!

I thought we were talking about tournaments. 'Flings in particular seem to be often favoured by house rules, for example sometimes they get the Chef for 50,000. Sometimes they get doubles on one or both Trees (more valuable than doubles on other teams). Sometimes I have even seen Ogres allowed on 'Fling teams. In these conditions it can seem a bit of a lottery.

I don't worry about Stunty teams in leagues. Only against well coached Stunty teams in tourneys, no doubt because I tend to take a team with no starting Block nor Tackle, and just 1 or 2 re-rolls. Having said that, I've won all my games against them bar one.

Stunty teams in tourneys can be exceedingly well coached, in my experience (not always, but, say, half the time).

All the best.

so... seems the thread got a bit derailed, but I guess that what happens naturally. I just wanted to say that for now I chose Halflings (the announcement for Willy's new team completely swung the vote to their side). On another note: A friend of mine who wanted to field underworld decided to go with goblins, so guess who'll be running an underworld team as his second roster :) ...
