One Turn Scorer Question

Post by Rewslaun »

Greetings,

I'm in a 3 man 20 team blood bowl league and two of my teams have a one turn scorer (Skaven, Wood Elf). When I first built the gutter runner (one turn scorer) I thought it would be a lot of fun, but after a couple of touchdowns I really didn't find it that satisfying. The wood elf catcher was made just to counter the gutter runner. I have no interest in trying to score with them every time I get the ball. They only leave the reserve box if: I need them to have 11 players on the pitch, I'm getting kicked to with 1 turn left in the half or if I'm behind by a couple of scores and I need to make them up fast. These are two of the best teams in our league and 90% of the time these players never make it out of the reserve box.

By having these players ride the pine for most of the game I am left with 3 gutter runner/ catchers. I feel like I would be better off if I retired these players and bought new replacements. There are many times when i could use a fourth gutter runner/catcher.

Do you guys play with one turn scorers? Do you keep them on the pitch all the time or only when you want them to score?

I would play these guys all the time, both GR's and WE catchers can one turn score without any skill upgrades anyway.

How do you define "1 turn scorer"? With Skaven, a GR with sidestep is a pretty good one turner, and with +ma and sidestep, an amazing one.

I use one turners all the time, but I always take Sidestep before sprint (almost as good except when you have about 3 players left alive), and I field them on defense too, as a fast moving sidestepper is always useful!

Both players have +1 to their movement and then sprint.

Maybe I need to stop sheltering them and throw them into the mix full time. I just won't focus the offense around them.

Absolutely, if you're considering cutting them anyway then you may as well get them on the pitch all the time and let the natural order of things proceed. They'll be great on defense as well, nothing puts pressure on an opposition QB like a player in the face straight from kick-off :)

I always played my one-turners the whole game for several reasons:

1) Having a guy that can move 13 squares is incredibly useful. He can provide assists from clear across the pitch or grab a loose ball and run away with it and if you kick deep and get a Blitz! on the kick off, he can get to the ball easily.

2) They're a great distraction. I won many a game because my opponent was so fixated on taking my one-turner out that they ignored the rest of my team.

3) When you win with a one-turn score and your opponent starts whining about it, you can say "Hey, he was on the pitch the whole game! You could've taken him out!"

As far as feeling guilty about winning with one-turners goes, you really shouldn't. That's what rats and woodies do. That's how they win. Some teams win by smashing the other team and reducing their numbers so they can score. Others win simply by running past the defense and scoring. People that complain about one-turners don't seem to mind killing half your team. Have you ever heard someone say "I'm not going to throw as many blocks anymore. I feel bad when I kill so many rats."? Of course not. They don't feel bad about destroying your team so why should you feel bad about out-scoring them?

Another thing to keep in mind is that as your league progresses, the bashy teams will get more and more guard, mighty blow, and tackle and will be much better at taking your rats and elves off the pitch. When that happens, you will NEED those one-turners to win games. You will be severely out numbered almost every single game. Winning with a one-turner won't feel so cheap when you have four guys receiving the kick off at half time and your opponent has 11. You'll need those winnings to replace all the dead players on your team.

Wait, how come nobody is mentioning leap?

Whenever I'm staring down a one turn touchdown I set up with three guys on the line and the rest set up nearer to the endzone arranged in three stacks and then two lone players (who would be the ones with diving tackle, prehenisle tail, tentacles, or at least tackle and some positioning skill. )

That makes for tough dodging, and it doesn't seem like rocket science to do that. Is there some eaiser way through that I (and thankfully my opponents) aren't seeing, or do you guys just get your girlfriend to blow on the dodge dice and start slinging a bunch of times?
