It is a very competitive team; the Bull Centaurs are amongst the best players available, and really help this team.

For some good starting teams, you'd best look in the Tactics and Team Development forum, or perform a search. There have been several good threads on this topic already, I think...

Cheers :D ,

Chaos Dwarfs are a very good team with a strong starting roster and lots of development possibilties.

The final in the France Blood Bowl tournament was all Chaos Dwarf :)

Starting the team is a matter of taste, in my league i started with no BCs, but 6 CDs, 6 HGs, full 9 FF and 4 RRs and an Apo. Bought the first BC after game 2, the second after game 5 and a troll after game 7. It worked well (they are 9-0-0 right now), but i'd recommend to start with a BC.

However, Chaos Dwarfs can be painful if you are cursed with bad luck, as they lack a lot of agility. If you are on offense i would field at least 3 HGs as they are the only ones that can handle the ball properly and they easily drop out with a low AV and no/few skills. If you play agility teams (esp. elfs) your only good chance to win is usually to reduce them to 6-7 players on the pitch, a task that can be quite boring sometimes and needs tactics the other teams don't really like to see (fouling / piling on) and has a certain chance to really destroy the other team. In France i killed 3 Wood Elfs in one game, something they would suffer from for several games in a real league. So don't expect to be the favorite opponent of everybody in your league.

A developed CD team can be a painful experience for every opponent. Bull Centaurs really start rocking after getting Break Tackle and rule the pitch with their effective movement of 9. Chaos Dwarfs are slow in progression, but once they are equipped with Guard and/or Mighty Blow, they are a hard nut to crack and deal out a lot of damage. A Troll with Piling On is not only a fearsome casualty machine, but also draws lots of attention (i.e. blitzes) away from the BCs. AV9 and Regenerate helps him to stay on the pitch without having to waste your apothecary on a cheap brute.

Hobgoblins are very underestimated players and have a unimpressive stat line, but are irreplacable in the CD roster. Get ballhandling skills, Block, Kick and of course Dirty Player (with your low speed, you can't afford to leave a prone opponent close to your endzone if you don't control the ball). Pray to Hashut for AG upgrades (this turns them into a lineelf practically) and doubles (Dodge, Pass together with Ag+). You will need 1 or 2 Hobgoblins in the opposing half of the field if you need to score quickly, as they are the only players that can match the speed of the Bull Centaurs, so equip them for it (Blodgers would be ideal).

They are also fun to paint and can make a real good looking team (imo only if you stay away from bright colors). YOu can find a gallery of my CDs by clicking on the [WWW]button below.

I've been curious, in match ups, how do they stack up to the dwarf teams though?

I played three games vs Dwarves, posting a record of 2-0-1. Tough games though, all with 1 point margin, except for the draw !!

Seriously, it is indeed a tough team for rookie coaches. It took me a while to get comfy with them. But once you are, they're great !

I started mine with
6 CD's
8 Hobgoblins
8 FF
3 RR
30 K

Bought the apoth next, then a RR, then the BC's, then extra RR (I know have 7!) and a mino. Please, don't start the Wild Animal debate ! It's been done numerous time !

Honestly? No.
Chaos Dwarves are good for tournaments or a short seasoned league, but not for continuing league play. Main advantage to CDs are the skills. But considering a team with a rating of 200-250 (easily possible in a long league) Orcs, Lizards, Elves, Undead seem to be superior (from my point of view).
the biggest drawback: you may field 9 players (incl. Rookie Troll) that are good, but the rest of your team consists of crappy hobgobs which are good for nothing but distraction of your opponent. A strong orc team may easily decimate your Dwarves and Centaurs, so you'll have to field more and more hobgobs (which suck). On the other hand if you decimate the orcs, he can field orc lineman which are only a bit slower than your hobgobs but MUCH more resilient. It can be done if the orcs just have a few skills, but if everyone has two or three skills your CDs are dead meat.
(ok, I'm exaggerating a bit but you'll get the point)

Another problem: CDs seem to be very difficult to play for beginners. You have only 2-4 players of average speed on the pitch. The dwarves, backbone of your team, are slow. You have to get along with positional play and field control to use them to their full potential. I like CDs very much (for tournament play, of course) but I believe in better alternatives for league play.

PS: I admit It, I'm also playing CDs in our league. But I mainly depend of crappy ooponents and opponent teams

PPS: And a good portion of luck

Also, blood bowl is the last bastion for the Chaos Dwarfs in the GW rainbow of games. The squats were pitched from 40k, even though the fluff explained their existance pretty well, and now chaos dwarfs seem heading out the door in Warhammer fantasy as well. The big hats, at least, don't fit the new style of warhammer at all, but fit BEAUTIFULLY in Blood Bowl.

Actually, gav is on the record as saying they will be back. They are due for an army book somtime after the wood elves (i.e. mid 2004- early 2005)

They will probably be losing the Sumerian look :pissed: and the hats  but, they are still in the fluff, and will not be squated.

I heard (here? or on NAF? ) that the Perry's were penciled in to do the new WFB CD's. They'd keep the curly beards and tusks, and would have sensible size headgear. Army book to be called "Engineers of Chaos(?)".

Yeah, but there was a chaos variant.

I'm actually wondering if CDs aren't a little too strong for tournaments. MA9 (effectively...not that that ALWAYS works out as I found out yesterday on FUMBBL) ST4 players are nasty when combined with great blockers and dirt cheap cannon fodder.

My FUMBBL team is competitive, but not winning too much.

we figurred at the rendez-vous that players would think that. So now the plan is to all take chaos dwarf teams to the bloodbowl and first skills are piling on, piling and piling on (on troll, and two bull centaurs)
