How to run a succeful tournament.

Plan Ahead.

Location:

Pick a location that suits the game. Ideally you want long rows of fairly wide tables. Round tables suck for BB because you can only get one game on each table. The depth of the table is important for fitting the board between players without overlapping the edges, otherwise you risk flipping half the board (and the beautifully painted teams that were on it) over.

It's also important to know how many coaches you can provide for. As the game gets more popular, you're going to need to watch the total number of spots you have open. There's nothing worse than over booking a tournament.

Advertising:

Make fliers and pass them out to every game store around. Make cool posters and put them up too. Talk to everyone at your local leagues. Post your tournament at all the active BB sites on the internet (TalkBloodBowl, BloodBowl.com, BloodBowl.net, BloodBowlCentral, etc etc)

Getting the message out that you're holding a tournament will get more people to show up. You may even meet new coaches in your area that you didn't know were there. As long as you have space, get as many coaches as you can.

Make sure you offer as much information as possible in your advertising, including Location, Date, Time, Number of Rounds, Scoring Method, Schedule Type, Prizes, NAF Santioning, and contact information.

Time:

Make sure you have enough time for each round. We've seen that 2 hours is a reasonable amount of time for a game when both teams are near 100TR. Most coachs will finish their games earlier and wander around. There will always be those who finish later and you'll need to work out how to declare those games before they happen.

Rounds:

Four rounds in one day is about all a normal coach can handle, and most will be dead tired at the end of it. Three rounds in one day is better if you are planning a two day event.

Scoring Methods:

There are numerous scoring methods. Most give points for TD's scored and Casualtied caused. Some include points for painting and sportsmanship. Whatever you decide will probably be alright with the participants, as long as you tell them in advance. Many coaches will pick particular rosters based on the scoring method and most will pick their best painted team if painting is included in the scoring. Informing your coaches in advance as to how the tournament will be scored if vital.

Schedule Type:

Most of the modern tournaments are Swiss Systems, but some are Single Elimination (also called KO), or even Random Pairing. It's important to understand how each works and to have firm rules in place for dealing with the odd situations that might pop up with any given system. In particular, tie-breaking rules are key.

Prizes:

There should be a clearly defined set of prizes for the tournament. Commonly prizes reward 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Best Painted, Best Sport, and Worst Luck. You shouldn't feel limited to just those. Also, check with both local game stores and GW for prize support.

NAF Sanctioning:

If you plan to be NAF Sanctioned, you need to register your event at www.thenaf.net. Sanctioned events give NAF members a chance to improve their NAF Coach Ratings, and gives you a wider pool of coaches. NAF sanction normally requires atleast 6 weeks advanced lead time.

Get Organized.

Before the first round can even get started you're going to need several things.

* A way to record match pairs and round results.
* Blank Roster sheets. Many will not bring them even if asked.
* Pens, pencils, more paper. You'll need lots.
* Many copies of the tournament rules.

After each round, record all the relevant information and double check it. If required, determine the pairings for the next round.

this is the basis.

Think to special rules, think how to occupy the players during rounds.
think a lot of stuff, be prepared to be exhausted after this tourny day.
think about how to feed them also.

'Opzij Opzij' actually is quite okay (it's the pro speaking here) but the rest of his albums suck big time.

I'm a bit curious about these.

Swiss I think I understand -normally a random draw for the 1st round (but could be seeded) - and may have a final, or even semi finals. But generally you'll play someone with a similar ranking to yours.

Single Elimination - what happens to the losers? Would tournaments make the draw after every round or once at the beginning (like tennis)?

Random Pairing - presumably you shouldn't end up playing someone twice?
