I don't believe in teaching people to play the game if they don't show interest right away. That's a surefire way to get people to join your league who will quite after only 2 or 3 games.

One thing I've seen is playing the game with only seven players on the pitch for each side. This really simplifies the game and makes the blocking not so intimidating.

The hardest part for newbies is seeing blocking assists. Having less players on the pitch reduces this alot.

Orcs vs Humans works really well for this type of game.
